Immigration procedures

Different types of immigration procedures In our country, there are different types of immigration procedures that foreigners can undertake, depending on the person’s particular circumstances, and specifically on some variables such as nationality and length of the intended stay in the country. We outline the main aspects of each below.

1) Provisional identity sheet

This is an authorization to stay within the national territory for up to 180 days. It is processed at the National Bureau of Migration, where it is necessary to account for the activity that gives rise to the request and its end date. The following documentation must be submitted:

  • Applicant’s vaccination certificate.
  • Photocopy of the applicant’s identity document and original ID.
  • Photocopy of the identity document of the company representative.
  • Letter on the company’s letterhead.
  • Notarial certificate of representation.

2) Temporary residence for MERCOSUR nationals

This residence allows individuals to work in Uruguay for up to two years and is granted only to nationals of MERCOSUR member or associated countries, i.e., Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, and Guyana. The procedure is carried out at the National Bureau of Migration, where the following documentation must be submitted:

  • Passport-size photo
  • Health card and vaccinations
  • Identity document and photocopies
  • Uruguay entry report
  • Criminal records
  • Birth certificate

3) Permanent residence for MERCOSUR nationals

Similar to the previous one, but permanent. Nationals of MERCOSUR member or associated countries may apply for it by presenting the same documentation as for the temporary one.

4) Ordinary temporary residence

The term is two years and may be extended for an additional two years. Proceedings are carried out at the National Bureau of Migration by presenting the following documentation:

  • Passport-size photo
  • Identity document
  • Birth certificate
  • Criminal records
  • Health card
  • Vaccination certificate
  • Letter on the company’s letterhead.
  • Notarial certificate of representation.

5) Ordinary permanent residence

Similarly to the previous one, the interested party must personally submit the following documentation once the procedure has been initiated:

  1. Passport-size photo
  2. Identity document
  3. Birth certificate
  4. Criminal records
  5. Health card
  6. Vaccination certificate
  7. Means of subsistence
